What are you thankful for in your life?

” I read a story about an anthropologist who proposed a game to the kids in an African tribe. He put a basket full of fruit near a tree and told the kids that who ever got there first won the sweet fruits. When he told them to run they all took each others hands and ran together, then sat together enjoying their treats. When he asked them why they had run like that as one could have had all the fruits for himself they said: Ubuntu, how can one of us be happy if all the other ones are sad?”

* Ubuntu in the Xhosa culture means “I am because we are”.

This beautiful story makes me reflect on all that I am thankful for in my life.     How does this story make you feel?

Write a paragraph about all that you are thankful for in your life. Follow the structure of a paragraph.

Your Expression: Favourite Song

Many of us have our favourite artists and favourite songs that we listen to on a regular basis.  The songs we listen to often say a lot about who we are, but what do we think about the songs themselves?  Using an appropriate subject, write about your favourite song using this outline:

1) What is you favourite song?

2) Give a brief description of what the song is about.

3) What audience do you think the song was intended for?

4) How does the song make you feel?

5) What kind of images does the song produce in your mind?

6) Is there a part of the song that speaks to you emotions more than the rest?  Is this because of the music or a specific lyric?

Going for a Walk

This amazing scene was photographed in Corner Brook, Newfoundland by my cousin.

Back home, autumn is a delicious feast for the eyes.  The colors create a majestic scene across the landscape. This time of year may not be as noisy as Spring, when new life is bursting forth, but there are still plenty of sounds in Autumn’s symphony. Canadian geese flying overhead, the breeze rustling the leaves and the crackling of burning fires all give this season a special place on the calendar. The smell of cool fresh air in the afternoon and those last beautiful sunsets of October are the best ones.

Imagine you are out for a walk one day in the scene above. Describe your journey. Something out of the ordinary happens; something that you will never forget. Use your imagination and describe in detail your walk on that Autumn afternoon.

Highlights of Our School Year!

Many people believe that they could never write a story. How far that is from the truth. Stories weave their way throughout our days. They are made from the simple events that mark our journey on this trail called “life”. People like to share their stories and tell about the lessons they have learned. Your memories, however small or insignificant they seem to you, have the makings for a great story.

Write a about your 2011-12 school year. What memories will you take with you into the future? Please write a about some highlights from your classes this year. What were some funny things that happened? Did you love learning about anything in particular?

What will I remember? There’s so much….. the sharing of books stand out, blogging, having both Lois Lowry and Lois Duncan on our blog and David Ross of course…….but mostly…… I will miss all of you and our time spent learning together!
Have a wonderful summer……safe travels and happy times!
