I think it was someone who was helping Phoebe’s mom with planting the plants somewhere else? Or he can be a cousin or a friend helping out, she probably called him to help out.
I think the unknown man is Tom Fleet because he showed up at the Cantankerous river where gram and gramps were in the river knee deep. Salamanca was talking to Tom Fleet like he was the secret person sending her letters, Tom Fleet was making the secret letter sending making it obvious that he’s the person sending the letters to Salamanca.
Maybe Phoebe’s real dad or a long lost brother named Bob or a Ghost.
i think it was, someone who was friends with Mr. Winterbottom looking for him but left because no one answered.
I think it could be the landlord or maybe the lunatic.
Mrs. Pickford, Mrs. Cadaver’s blind mother she was not there nor did they mention anything about her when Mrs. Cadaver and Mr. Birkway was burying a rhododendron bush so before Phoebe and Sal was watching the two burying the bush she could of left the house and since she is blind she could of took that long to find Phoebe’s house.
I think it was Tom Fleet, the person that showed up at the river when Salamanca, gram and gramps were sitting in the river because it was really hot. At the hospital he gave Salamanca a letter with his address, so he obviously wants to get in touch with them.
Maybe a family friend..? He did speak like he knew the Winterbottoms. What do you think?
The unknown man was the one who helped Gram and Gramps and the river. I say this because I remember this off the book.

I think that, this unknown guy is the person that went to phoebe’s house and knocked on her door without them knowing who it is. Or it can be Tom Fleet that knocked on her door.
i think it was, Ben asking to visit, but Sal and Phoebe didn’t answer so he left.
